I know, not another boring post about 301 redirects, but I came across a pretty specific issue recently with one of my sites so I thought I’d post the solution that I finally worked out here. I almost named this post “Why It’s Important To Fail”, but I think most webmasters/SEOs understand that without failure, there can be no success. So I digress…

Sorry, I don’t have any words of wisdom to pass along on this or this one because I’m too busy right now and it’s already been covered in all of the usual locations (and every one is a better dissertation on the subject than I could produce). What I can offer, though, is a short video that I think sums up Google’s stance on paid links very accurately. Stay under the radar and you’ll have nothing to worry about.

I’m far from the first to comment on Geico commercials, but a new batch of skits has definitely forced my hand into expressing how much I love these 15 second blurbs of sheer advertising genius:

I know I’m being an idiot blogger here, but I wanted to quickly jot down some random thoughts about my last post before they exit my overly-crammed little brain. In a few days I will revisit, research, and cleanup so that it’s not the train wreck it is right now.

Business.com has undoubtedly positioned itself among the best and most respected directories in existence today. It’s one of only a handful of “must submit to” directories for any small business owner, right up there with Yahoo (when appropriate) and DMOZ. With the exception of temporarily placing nofollow on some listings, they’ve done a great job and have had surprisingly good customer service in my experiences with them over the years. I always appreciate companies that regularly call or email their customers just to check in and see how things are going. It’s simply good customer service and can definitely lead to increased sales, but I won’t go off on a customer retention lecture (just yet).

Here’s some advice that I now feel comfortable sharing, since links from .edu’s really aren’t as powerful as they once were now that their “weight” has become fairly common knowledge. Follow the steps below and essentially you’ll be killing two birds with one stone, if you’re:
1) looking for employees but don’t want to pay the high costs of recruiters, employment agencies, job sites, etc.
2) looking for .edu links but, again, don’t want to pay (man you’re cheap) and need to keep the links natural looking to remain under the radar

Just a quick post to talk about how truly AMAZED I am at how many site owners just don’t get it when it comes to converting visitors, yet they really seem to get SEO.
They understand that it takes great content to get noticed. They understand that they must get the word out about their great content in order to get other quality, relevant sites to link to theirs. They understand on-page optimization and site architecture/internal link structure. They even know about varying inbound link anchor text and formulating deep linking strategies for best results. And, eventually, the savvy site owners achieve the top organic spots in the engines.

Wow, that was a long blog vacation. Almost four months without one single post…to be honest I needed a break but really missed this blog. I still managed to blog in my other niche blog circles during the break, but here my thoughts never made it past draft status. That will now change.
Time to dust off the blog, update some links, and I’m even working on a complete re-design (because this barely customized WP 1.5 theme just isn’t cutting it). Stay tuned for some actual posting soon…
