Top 10 Reasons Why This Blog Sucks

Posted Thursday, Aug. 2nd 2007 at 3:34 am by Jason Hendricks

This blog sucks when compared to most, but it’s not just one thing that makes it so bad. It’s a combination of many different basic blogging mistakes. So, maybe by pointing out what I know I’m doing wrong, I can help someone else avoid being a dumbass like me when it comes to blogging. Let’s keep the self-degradation going and start the list, shall we?

Don’t Be Afraid To Upgrade

Posted Tuesday, Jul. 31st 2007 at 11:02 am by Jason Hendricks

Not that anything has changed and you’ll probably never notice, but I just upgraded to the latest version of WordPress. To be honest I was pretty nervous about the whole situation, since WP can be a little buggy at times and especially because I’m not talking about a minor upgrade here. I’m talking all the way from version 1.5.2 to the most current 2.2.1 (yikes).

Luckily, I found a very easy to use plugin that was just updated a few days ago with tons of bug fixes. The plugin is called WordPress Automatic Upgrade, and it does…well, just that. You can select from either a wizard style interface for upgrading or click one button and watch the automatic upgrade happen via a progress meter. Very useful for a lazy busy person like myself.

301 Redirect Example When Using Wildcard DNS For Subdomains

Posted Wednesday, Jun. 13th 2007 at 6:09 pm by Jason Hendricks

I know, not another boring post about 301 redirects, but I came across a pretty specific issue recently with one of my sites so I thought I’d post the solution that I finally worked out here. I almost named this post “Why It’s Important To Fail”, but I think most webmasters/SEOs understand that without failure, there can be no success. So I digress…

How Not To Be Seen By Google

Posted Friday, Apr. 27th 2007 at 3:32 pm by Jason Hendricks

Sorry, I don’t have any words of wisdom to pass along on this or this one because I’m too busy right now and it’s already been covered in all of the usual locations (and every one is a better dissertation on the subject than I could produce). What I can offer, though, is a short video that I think sums up Google’s stance on paid links very accurately. Stay under the radar and you’ll have nothing to worry about.

Geico Commercials: More Props On A Job Well Done

Posted Monday, Mar. 26th 2007 at 11:32 pm by Jason Hendricks

I’m far from the first to comment on Geico commercials, but a new batch of skits has definitely forced my hand into expressing how much I love these 15 second blurbs of sheer advertising genius:

Deceptive Titles: How Far Is Too Far?

Posted Thursday, Mar. 22nd 2007 at 2:35 pm by Jason Hendricks

I know I’m being an idiot blogger here, but I wanted to quickly jot down some random thoughts about my last post before they exit my overly-crammed little brain. In a few days I will revisit, research, and cleanup so that it’s not the train wreck it is right now.

Business.com Directory Submissions For $1.00

Posted Wednesday, Mar. 14th 2007 at 2:07 am by Jason Hendricks

Business.com has undoubtedly positioned itself among the best and most respected directories in existence today. It’s one of only a handful of “must submit to” directories for any small business owner, right up there with Yahoo (when appropriate) and DMOZ. With the exception of temporarily placing nofollow on some listings, they’ve done a great job and have had surprisingly good customer service in my experiences with them over the years. I always appreciate companies that regularly call or email their customers just to check in and see how things are going. It’s simply good customer service and can definitely lead to increased sales, but I won’t go off on a customer retention lecture (just yet).

Find Employees While Building .edu Links

Posted Wednesday, Mar. 7th 2007 at 6:52 pm by Jason Hendricks

Here’s some advice that I now feel comfortable sharing, since links from .edu’s really aren’t as powerful as they once were now that their “weight” has become fairly common knowledge. Follow the steps below and essentially you’ll be killing two birds with one stone, if you’re:

1) looking for employees but don’t want to pay the high costs of recruiters, employment agencies, job sites, etc.
2) looking for .edu links but, again, don’t want to pay (man you’re cheap) and need to keep the links natural looking to remain under the radar
